Washington University Emergency Medicine Pathway to Research for Emergency Physicians (WUEM-PREP)

Integrated Emergency Medicine Residency and Research Fellowship to Train Future Emergency Care Researchers

The goal of the WUEM-PREP program is to develop future emergency medicine physician-scientists through integration of the strong clinical training of the WUEM residency program with rigorous training in the conduction of emergency care research.  Experiential learning through the completion of a mentored research project in either clinical, basic, or translational research during dedicated research time in the residency years and accelerated research fellowship is the cornerstone of the program.  Participants also gain experience in scholarly activities such as peer review, research dissemination, and grant writing which are essential to a career as an independent investigator.  Participants utilize individual development plans to build expertise based on the participant’s prior research training/experience and future career goals.

Key benefits for WUEM-PREP program participants:

  1. Longitudinal dedicated research time primarily in PGY3, PGY4, and the fellowship year without sacrificing clinical experience.
  2. Academic allowance of $20,000 to support the participant’s individual development plan needs.
  3. Guaranteed acceptance to the WUEM Emergency Care Research Fellowship.
  4. Acceleration of the fellowship portion of training to 1 year rather than 2 years.

Ideal candidates will have significant research training or experience and be dedicated to a career in emergency care research.  Prior research training/experience may include completion of PhD, research relevant Master’s program, or significant prior research experience without a formal research degree.
