Fall Traditions and Festivities: Reconnecting and Continuing Longstanding Events

As the autumn season gets underway, the Department of Emergency Medicine is gearing up for a full calendar of beloved traditions, departmental gatherings, and national alumni reunions.

Many of our faculty members and alumni joined us in Chicago at the ACEP Scientific Assembly. Closer to home, and after a hiatus in the post-COVID times, last year the residency social committee officially brought back the annual Halloween party in all its messy, creative glory (date TBD). November will also see the return of the annual Turkey Bowl—our high-stakes touch football match against the Department of Surgery. Dr. Doug Scherer will be back on the field, knee brace locked in place, as Emergency Medicine aims to wrest the coveted Golden Bedpan back from Surgery’s recent winning streak.

Alongside these competitive traditions, our academic calendar features the annual on November 24, featuring guest speaker Dr. Rickquel Tripp from Pittsburgh, who will discuss health equity in EMS and the historical legacy of Freedom House. Finally, we will close out the calendar year in December with our classic Jeopardy Journal Club, where resident and attending teams face off in friendly yet fierce trivia competition.

While our department continues to grow and evolve, these cherished events keep our community anchored. We hope these updates bring back fond memories of your own residency days!
