With compassion, innovation and excellence, we provide exceptional, state of the art health care; champion health equity, specifically improving outcomes for all who walk through our door; and train the next generation of physicians with the same ideals.
Leadership
Reuben Johnson, MD, MS
Chief, Division of General Emergency Medicine
Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine
“Emergency physicians are the ‘fixers’ in the house of medicine, and I’m proud and honored to be a part of this department. Whether it’s in a pandemic, boarding and overcrowding or any other crisis, this group rolls up their sleeve and performs with distinction to find solutions for our patients.”
Education
The division provides educational support to medical students and residents in a number of ways including both didactics and bedside teaching. We specialize in teaching the fundamentals of emergency medicine, including orthopedics, bedside procedures, and knowledge translation. We also provide education and mentorship in the practice of emergency medicine for those especially interested in community medicine.
Clinical services
Members of the division all practice independently as well as provide supervision to the resident physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. We also work at two WashU emergency medicine community sites — Barnes-Jewish West County and Missouri Baptist Medical Center — and have been involved in reducing hospital readmissions as well as managing patients requiring complex care.
Research
The division emphasizes work involving knowledge translation, health equity, and the practice of emergency medicine.
