Reuben Johnson, MD, MS

I’m originally from Virginia Beach, VA.  St. Louis is the further west I’ve ever lived.  Prior to Washington University I was an assistant professor at East Carolina.  There I focused primarily on education, eventually becoming an associate program director for the Emergency Medicine residency as well as the program director for the combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency. My academic focus at that time was asynchronous learning and resident assessment.  Since moving to St. Louis I’ve worked primarily on the administrative and operations side; serving as medical director for our observation unit and our short lived urgent care clinic. My current role is the director of the Division of General Emergency Medicine.   In this role, I get to use all of the skills I’ve acquired over the years including mentorship, career planning, networking, faculty development as well as assessment and evaluation. I currently serve on the SAEM national committees for faculty development and wellness.  Clinically my interests are in observation medicine as well as billing and coding.

I believe in maintaining work-life balance and its one of the reasons I chose Emergency Medicine. I have two kids in elementary school and often coach them in the sport of the season.  In my free time I enjoy hikes with family as well as the perks of living in the Central West End (walking to work, forest park, etc.).
