Philp Chan, MD

I’ve been at Wash U / BJH for 10 years now, having started residency here in 2013.  I finished the four years of training and decided to stay with Wash U because of all the great people in our department, in addition to loving being in St. Louis.  I had initially planned to work closely with the residency and find a niche in education, however, I had a longstanding interest in operations, and slowly took on more and more administrative roles, including taking part in throughput committees, becoming medical director of our group of emergency APPs, and most recently assuming the role of medical director at our Barnes West County ED.  I still dabble occasionally with resident and med student education, but the main focus of my time is on these administrative roles.

My wife and I have two sons, and currently they are in preschool and 1st grade, so when I’m not working, my hands are full with keeping them from demolishing our house and causing bodily harm to each other.  I’ve played tennis and volleyball recreationally since grade school, although in recent years these have been replaced with weightlifting.  I have a penchant for cooking, and I tell myself that when I retire, I’ll spend my time making food and playing all the video games I missed out on during childhood.

I try to stay calm and collected on the outside, even if the dumpster is on fire.  I’m a believer in the idea that many problems and conflicts can be solved with talking it out with people, and I seek to understand other people’s perspectives when encountering disagreement.   Chatting over a cup of coffee is something I enjoy, but I’m always open to text, phone, email, and Zoom.
