Joan Noelker, MD, MACM

I am an Associate Professor and Associate Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) at Washington University (Wash U) in St Louis. I have an MD from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and in 2017 I completed a Masters of Medical Education through the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. I completed my residency training, including a chief resident year, as well as a medical education fellowship at Wash U. I served as Assistant Program Director for the EM Residency at Wash U for four years before transitioning primarily to undergraduate medical education work with the new Wash U Medical School Gateway Curriculum.

I have interests in curriculum design, simulation in medical education, transitions within medical education, and dissemination of emergency medicine core knowledge through speaking engagements, and I have delivered dozens of lectures on these topics on the local, regional, national and international stage. I have been honored to see my teaching skills recognized through numerous local and national awards for teaching and presenting, including the Rising Star Award for the New Speakers Forum at the ACEP Scientific Assembly, the Wash U Academy of Educators Rising Star Award, and the ACEP National Emergency Medicine Junior Faculty Teaching Award.

On a more personal note, I am originally from St. Louis. I lived away for 10 years, first in Virginia then Ireland, until matching back at Wash U for residency. I have a passion for rock climbing, which I picked up during medical school, I love making art (college art major), reading history and sci-fi/fantasy, and my favorite activity is spending time with my husband (also in EM), two human kids and one fur baby.
