I arrived at WUSM in 2005 eager to gain proficiency in research training. Three years before, I completed an emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship in New York City where I was one of two fellows nationally. I mention this because my experiences convincing a whole field about a different and new way to do “emergency medicine” informed my career greatly. I gained expertise with new technology. Next, I gained research training and eventually obtained a federal training grant. Then, I learned how hard a career in emergency medicine research would prove to be. Lastly, I found out it’s hard to persuade people to do “your thing” no matter how relevant to their practice; behavior change is hard!
On a personal note I have 2 children and live near the hospital. I grew up in St. Louis before going away to study for 15 years. I am obsessed with development of youth sport skills (namely ice hockey) and find the parallels between skill development in sport, acquisition of emergency medicine expertise, and innovation and research within the field of EM remarkably relatable.
On a professional note, I am deadline driven and prefer organized meetings with clear goals in mind. I like to engage in deep academic thinking during sessions to help mentees flush out their ideas. A commitment to regularly scheduled meetings is a must.
