Program Curriculum

The Administration fellowship program is designed to prepare trainees for a career in Emergency Medicine leadership through a combination of classroom-based education and hands-on training.

Formal Education & Didactics

The Department of Emergency Medicine provides tuition support for an Executive Master’s in Business Administration through WashU’s Olin Business School. Designed specifically for individuals seeking senior leadership roles, the EMBA provides a comprehensive curriculum that prepares learners to perform successfully in dynamic and changing environments while providing additional focus on individual leadership development.

In addition to formal coursework, fellows will participate in monthly didactic sessions that build upon the concepts and skills of the EMBA while providing a specialized focus on healthcare management and clinical operations.

Clinical Leadership Experience

WashU Administration fellows serve as Assistant Medical Directors at one of our department’s clinical ED sites for the duration of their training. In this role, they will co-manage the day-to-day clinical operations of an academic emergency department, including patient flow, staff management, maintenance of clinical standards, quality and safety event reports, and collaboration with other services. This longitudinal leadership experience provides fellows the opportunity to develop, refine, and implement process improvement initiatives that will have a meaningful real-world impact on our clinical site operations and lived patient experiences.

Experiential Training

Over the course of the program, fellows are provided with targeted, immersive training opportunities to learn specific aspects of healthcare operations through individualized rotations and shadowing experiences in areas such as:

  • Human Resources Management
  • Patient Safety & Quality Improvement
  • Risk Management & Compliance
  • Financial Operations
  • Patient Experience & Community Engagement
  • Healthcare Advocacy

Administration fellows also contribute actively as standing members of hospital committees relevant to process improvement efforts at their primary clinical site.

Financial support is provided to WashU Administration fellows for participation in academic conferences and training courses that support their learning and leadership development.

    • ACEP ED Directors Academy – Leadership Essentials
    • Fellow choice between ACEP Scientific Assembly and SAEM Annual Meeting
  • Year 2:

Additionally, fellows are provided with a $1000 annual professional allowance that may be applied toward clinical or educational experiences, including conference travel.
