Director, Residency Program

As a self-proclaimed “coconut floating in the ocean” I have had a very winding path to—and through—emergency medicine.  I came to WashU in 2006 as a freshly-minted intern from Park City, Utah and had no intentions of staying in St. Louis.  (I barely knew where it was on the map when I interviewed!) My primary interest was global health and when it came time to decide what to do when I grew up, I had the opportunity to stay on with the department and spent much of my early faculty years working in the South Pacific and West Africa.  I established our resident global health elective working with Ghanaian EM residents in Kumasi, Ghana and supporting the long-standing work of the University of Michigan.  In 2014, the currents changed, and I became an Assistant Program Director for the residency.  In 2023, I took over the reins from my mentor and friend, Jason Wagner, and started a new journey as Program Director. It is such an incredible privilege to now lead the program that trained me and to work alongside colleagues who have supported me throughout my career.  It is even more of an honor to be a part of shaping and supporting our residents as they become the future leaders of our specialty. I never thought I would say that I’ve lived in St. Louis and been a part of WashU EM for going on 20 years—but I can’t imagine being anywhere else!  When I’m not in the hospital, you’ll find me traveling with my family, baking cookies, and (hopefully) teaching my daughter to love the mountains as much as I do.
