Kristen Mueller, MD

I am an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine (EM) at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. I am also a Faculty Scholar in the Institute of Public Health and the former director of emergency medicine resident research at Washington University School of Medicine. I attended college at St. Olaf College, medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed emergency medicine residency training at Washington University School of Medicine in 2014. After residency, I worked as full-time clinical faculty for several years, before pivoting to clinical research. In my current work, I am an active member of the Washington University Gun Violence Initiative and is engaged in research on firearm violence and injury prevention. I am also the physician liaison and research lead in the newly launched St. Louis Area Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program, Life Outside Violence—with a corresponding increasing presence and research portfolio in this space regionally and nationally. Pending a government shutdown, I anticipate starting a 5-year NIH K23 career development award period in the upcoming academic year to investigate barriers and facilitators to hospital-based violence intervention program enrollment.
As this training period will be supported by a team of mentors across EM, epidemiology, dissemination and implementation, community-based participatory research, and social work, I have experience on both sides of the mentorship relationship. I am flexible with my own mentees, and anticipate meeting with faculty mentees 4-6 times per year. Email or texting are my preferred communication modalities.
On a personal note, I am originally from Madison, WI and I still make regular treks to WI/MN lake country each summer. In addition to a general passion for travel, I also enjoy camping, hiking, scuba, sports, reading, the arts (theater, museum, movies, etc), and have been a season ticket holder at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Fabulous Fox theater for the last several years; I have my eye on St. Louis City soccer tickets in the future. I am also happily single and child-free, and live in my Central West End townhouse with my three fur babies.
