WashU Medicine emergency physicians see more than 150,000 patients annually, providing world-class specialty care to anyone who walks through our doors. Yet the Department of Emergency Medicine is so much more than the emergency room. Beyond providing world-class patient care, our emergency physicians:
- Deploy with disaster medical assistance teams to treat patients and provide medical direction when hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes strike
- Provide on-site services for area events ranging from professional sports to community fairs
- Train area police, fire departments/districts, EMS agencies and other first responders and provide daily prehospital patient care alongside them
- Volunteer for medical missions around the world
- Serve on local, state and national advisory boards to assure that critical laws and policies impacting the public meet the latest evidence-based medical standards
- Conduct critical research programs to advance emergency medicine and impact patient outcomes throughout the world
- Defray treatment costs for uninsured patients in our community
- Provide continuing medical education for physicians and nurses
- Train the next generation of leaders in emergency medicine
- Serve as board members, volunteers and trustees of the St. Louis Integrated Health Network, Behavioral Health Network of Greater St. Louis, Bridges to Care and Recovery, St. Louis City Mental Health Board and the St. Louis Area Crisis Intervention (CIT) Council.
In everything we do, we strive to make a profound community impact each and every day.
