  US last year\, more than handgun homicides and MVC’s combined. The blame g
 ame started and emergency physicians appear to often be in the <a href="htt
 p://epmonthly.com/article/unpacking-opioid-blame-game/" target="_blank" rel
 ="noopener noreferrer">center of the controversy</a>.</p><p>This multi-disc
 iplinary symposium will bring experts from Mental Health and Emergency Medi
 cine along with public officials to discuss the opioid crisis and several p
 otential clinical and political approaches to begin to address it.</p><p>Th
 e symposium will occur August 22nd from 9AM – 12PM at the Eric P. Newman Ed
 ucation Center located on Washington University School of Medicine campus. 
 The symposium is free\, so please come – bring a friend- and share your ide

 tegrate information\, educational objectives\, and data services to help fr
 ame the needs and trends in the NC Emergency Medical Services system. Josep
 h is the Executive Director of the Wake EMS Foundation\, Inc. A 501(c)3 non
 profit focused on historical\, educational and research objectives of the W
 ake EMS System. He manages the foundation functions and coordinates with th
 e Board of Directors.</p><p>Chief Zalkin is the Project Lead for the NC Con
 sortium Against Responder Violence (CARVNC). The State of NC using a grant 
 from The Duke Endowment\, have established awareness and reporting of viole
 nce events\, best practice and identified further research and resources to
  reduce these events.</p><p>In 2016\, after a deliberate and wanton attack 
 of a Wake County EMS Paramedic. Joseph assembled a multidisciplinary team t
 o Survey responders statewide as to the frequency and degree of violence in
  the workplace. The portal (www.carvnc.com) collects reports of violence\, 
 both actual and near-miss events in anonymous and named cases.</p><p>This y
 ear Joseph presented\, co-investigators\, to the National EMSToday Conferen
 ce on the project and additional objectives.</p><p>Joseph is a 1981 graduat
 e of the nation’s first ems baccalaureate program at Western Carolina. Jose
 ph holds a certificate from UNC’s School of Government in County and Munici
 pal Administration and is an adjunct clinical instructor for the UNC School
  of Medicine\, Department of Emergency Medicine\, EMS Fellowship Program.</

 \, complex care often was assumed to be a complicated form of healthcare de
 livered in a highly controlled\, time-limited setting.   Examples might inc
 lude a multidisciplinary surgical team performing a transplant in the OR or
  care rendered to a critically ill patient in the ICU requiring consultativ
 e input from multiple medical specialties.  Attention to the spiraling cost
 s of healthcare with focus on segments of the population that remain unwell
  despite clinical pathways to improve lead some to recognize that other\, c
 linical and nonclinical factors\, impact outcomes.  Mental health\, substan
 ce use disorders\, past life experiences\, and social determinants of healt
 h substantially determine the pathway to health and well being.  While such
  care is inherently complex\, seemingly impossible progress can occur with 
 appropriate insight and approach.  The 2022 Larry Lewis Symposium will addr
 ess complex care\, with Rachel Davis\, recent Director of Complex Care for 
 the Center for Health care strategies\, as keynote.</p></div><div class="is

 ong>Rachel Davis\, MPA\,</strong> is a national expert in complex care. She
  began her career as a case manager for individuals living with HIV/AIDS in
  Colorado. After receiving her Masters in Public Administration from New Yo
 rk University’s Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service\, she worked for 
 New York City’s public hospital system\, NYC H+H\, for four years. There\, 
 she helped build and oversee the system’s Health Home program. Following th
 is\, she spent nine years at the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) a
 s the Director of Complex Care. There\, she led a portfolio that included p
 rojects related to advancing complex care innovations\, consumer engagement
 \, supporting individuals experiencing homelessness\, trauma informed care\
 , “rising risk”\, community collaboration\, and digital health\, among othe
 rs. She is currently leading CHCS’ <em>Patient-Centered Complex Care Resear
 ch Agenda</em> initiative\, which seeks to provide the field with a bluepri
 nt for building the complex care evidence base in more rigorous\, coordinat
 ed\, and patient-centered ways . Rachel now has her own consulting business
 \, and is based in Denver\, Colorado<a>.</a></p></div></div><div class="is-

 of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Provider’s care transition model on o
 utpatient care. Jesse holds a PhD in political science from Harvard Univers

 al Needs and Technical Assistance. Carter leverages his experience implemen
 ting programs in the City of Camden to lead national field-building efforts
 \, including the development and activation of core competencies for comple
 x care\, and oversees the technical assistance work with programs throughou
 t the country.</p><p class="is-style-default">Prior to his current role\, C
 arter served as the Associate Director for Clinical Redesign Initiatives wh
 ere he oversaw operations and directed quality improvement activities for t
 he nationally recognized Camden City Medicaid Accountable Care Organization
 . Carter worked with the region’s health systems\, payers\, and primary car
 e community to pilot and scale interventions serving medically and socially
  complex patients\, including launching CMS’s Accountable Health Communitie
 s pilot to systematically screen patients in the region’s emergency rooms f
 or social determinants and provide navigation to needed services.</p><p cla
 ss="is-style-default">Before coming to the Camden Coalition of Healthcare P
 roviders\, Carter worked for the United States House of Representatives For
 eign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa\, Global Health\, and Human Rights. Car
 ter received a Bachelor of Economics from Old Dominion University\, a Maste

 r role at BJC\, she has worked the last 6 years to project manage various i
 nitiatives to support vulnerable populations\, including but not limited to
  complex care patients. The mission of BJC’s Community Health Improvement d
 epartment is to advance health equity for those most impacted by health dis
 parities in the urban and rural communities that BJC serves through authent
 ic and equitable partnerships with community stakeholders and community mem

 housing\, behavioral health and other support services.  Jonathan has been 
 working with Hospital to Housing and Healthy Housing since program implanta
 tion.   As a strong advocate for consumer directed care\, Jonathan created 
 St. Patrick Center’s consumer advisory board\, a place where clients have a
  voice and also sits on the St. Louis City Continuum of Care Board. Jonatha
 n graduated from St. Louis University with a Masters of Social Work in 2015
  and received his Bachelors of Social Work from the University of Missouri

  a Senior Financial Analyst in the Business Decision Support Department at

 gram is to validate the financial sustainability of the program by analyzin
 g the benefit of the program to hospital operating results. In her role as 
 an analyst at BJH\, she works collaboratively with Washington University Sc
 hool of Medicine on various strategic planning goals and special projects t
 o continuously improve practices\, utilization\, and performance.  Madelyn 
 received a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance from Southern Illin
 ois University and is currently enrolled at Webster University as a Master
